I am often asked how I got distribution for my films or how someone should go about getting distribution for a movie.  I have had my suggestions that have worked for me in the past, but to be honest, it had been awhile since my last time putting it to practice.

Luckily, I have a project that I can use to put these suggestions to the test.

The first thing is to know where to find distributors looking for content.  Here is how I do it.

The first and easiest thing to do is go to Google and search “film markets.”  My go-to is The American Film Market mainly because it is local to me.

At least for The American Film Market there is a exhibitors list with all of the distributors and sales agents that will have an official presence at the market.  Often times, if you got to their webpage the will also list all the different markets they will be attending, giving you more options for potential companies to contact.

As a career filmmaker, sometimes you may not want a sales agent and would prefer having a producer’s rep to help represent you and your project.  A place to find those companies is as simple as signing up for IMDb Pro.  There is a massive directory of names and companies in their database and you can find almost anyone working in “film.”

Now that you know where to find distributors, sales agents, producer’s rep and the works.  You will need to know who to contact and how to contact them.  I’ll follow up in future posts.
